PURPOSE
The organized unit of
United Methodist Women
shall be a community of women
whose PURPOSE is to know God and
to experience freedom as whole persons
through Jesus Christ;
To develop a creative, supportive fellowship;
and to expand concepts of mission
through participation
in the global ministries of the church.
What makes United Methodist Women (“UMW”) unique?  Over the years, UMW has been fueled by a sense of mission, believing that God calls us to a ministry of faith of action.  From its beginning, UMW has focused on ministries with women, children and youth.

Here at Miles, some of our service projects over the years have included:
  • Providing health kits and school kits to Annual Conference (shared worldwide by the United Methodist Committee on Relief where needed most)
  • Providing bag lunches for the NEST program at nearby churches (who provide overnight shelter to the homeless)
  • Leading activity nights with residents of Heart Havens Methodist Homes and the Lydia Roper Home
  • Providing scholarships to All God’s Children Camp (summer camp for children of incarcerated mothers)
  • Providing Thanksgiving baskets to United Methodist Family Services
  • Raising $5000 to build a well in Africa
  • Donating to the Wesley Community Center in Portsmouth and to other local ministries

Heart Havens is a non-profit organization that provides residential support to adults with a developmental disability, but it’s so much more than just a roof and a bed. At Heart Havens, people are empowerd to discover what they love and pursue their hopes and passions. Whether that’s getting involved in community theater, giving back to the community through a pet food drive, or simply having a party with friends, they support people with a developmental disability as they make their goals and dreams happen. Heart Havens operates homes in Richmond, Stuarts Draft, Lynchburg, and Virginia Beach. All of the homes have the capacity to house four residents, who are fully supervised at all times with dedicated and experienced staff.
